Australian Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour guidelines

To maintain good health and wellbeing, the Australian Government recommends 5-17 year olds should:

  • Accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day.
  • Limit their use of electronic media for entertainment to no more than two hours a day.
  • Break up long periods of sitting as often as possible.

Please see http://www.health.gov.au for more information.

How active are Australian children?

Currently only 9% of boys and 8% of girls aged 5-17 years in Australia meet both the physical activity and sedentary guidelines every day.1

Children spend most of their waking hours at school and home, and research shows that approximately 64% of this time is spent sitting. 2 These statistics show that we really need to target children’s physical activity and sedentary behaviours both at school and at home. Transform-Us! takes advantage of opportunities to incorporate movement and reduce sitting throughout the day, in both the school and home settings.
